Abstract

In 2015, there were 7,659 reported cases of dengue and 42 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in the state of Piauí, Brazil. ELISA-IgM was positive for dengue in 23,8% of GBS cases. The maximum cross-correlation analysis showed the best results upon assigning a delay of 1-2 months between dengue and GBS time series. Cases reported as suspect of dengue may be Zika as there are clinical similarities and the possibility of a serologic cross reactivity between these flaviviruses. It reinforces the need for an accurate laboratory diagnosis and encouraging systematic studies on the etiology of neurological diseases in different regions of the country.
